Our Story

In 2003, my husband and I met at his brother’s wedding. We got married in 2005 and had our first son Xavier in 2008. In 2011, we welcomed our second son Zander. If you had to describe our family it was active, energetic, and spontaneous. We were always moving no matter where we were or what we were doing! Although we enjoyed moving and having plans all the time, there were times when we would sit back, relax, and enjoy the quiet time. Well, that did not always happen. Our boys exuded a higher level of energy than usual and at times, Xavier had a difficult time coping with his emotions. With being a speech language pathologist, I would observe the boys to make sure all their developmental milestones were adequate and they were. But their energy level, impulsivity, and emotional regulation were not typical of an eight and five year old. We spoke to our pediatrician and that is when we got the initial diagnosis of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) for our eight year old. As years continued, our younger son was following the same path and he too received a diagnosis of ADHD at the age of eight. We had many struggles but persevered and wanted to share our journey with others. We wrote a memoir to spread awareness about ADHD. We wanted people to understand that having ADHD should not have a negative impact on an individual whether it is a kid or an adult. Having the diagnosis of ADHD should be embraced and individuals should be reminded of the strengths that go along with it. We wanted to turn a negative stigma into a positive one.

Our memoir is called, “Itchy Brain: A Family’s Perspective and Positive Outlook on ADHD.”

I can never imagine our lives without ADHD….

According to the CDC, there has been 5.7 million diagnosed cases of ADHD ranging from six to seventeen years of age.

We wrote this memoir to let people know they are not alone. While it is not easy and you may have more bad days than good, with the right support, ADHD is a gift.
